William Keith HughesDecember 18, 1929 ~ June 17, 2017 (age 87)
William K. (Bill) Hughes, 87, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away June 17, 2017 in Hackensack, MN. Bill was born December 18, 1929 to Harold O. and S. Juanita (Walton) Hughes in Decatur, IL. Following graduation from Stephen Decatur High School in 1947, he entered the U.S. Navy as a Machinists Mate. Bill served on the U.S.S. Missouri and U.S.S. Wisconsin and was a veteran of the Korean War. In 1954, he married Linda L. Major. They were married for 20 years until Linda’s untimely death in 1974. Bill worked as a home delivery salesman for Meadow Gold Milk. After home delivery sales were discontinued, he became an over-the-road trucker and did so until his retirement. He was an Eagle Scout and served many years as an adult Scout leader.
Bill married Judy Kovaleski in 1976. Bill and Judy remained married until her death in 2012. Following Judy’s death, Bill moved to Hackensack, MN where he lived in Birchview Gardens Assisted Living. His absolute favorite thing to do every week was to attend the American Legion Post in Hackensack for trivia and meat raffle nights. He loved fishing, carpentry and riding four wheelers through the Minnesota woods. Bill was most proud of the fact that he raised four sons who all went on to serve their country.
Survivors include bother, Robert Hughes, Decatur, IL; sons, Edward Hughes (Mary Ellen), Liberty, MO, Richard Hughes (Deb), Hackensack, MN, Scott Kovaleski (Karen), Montara, CA, and Todd Kovaleski, Belvidere, IL; grandchildren, Samantha Oliver (John), Sean Hughes, Meredith Koelliker (Christian), Drew and Nick Kovaleski, Mattea and Carissa Kovaleski; great granddaughter, Josephine Oliver; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by parents, Harold O. and S. Juanita (Walton) Hughes; sister, Barbara Riordan; wives, Linda (Major) Hughes, and Judy (Kovaleski) Hughes.
Services will be held at Union Congregational Church, 401 Lake Avenue, Hackensack, MN Friday, August 4, 2017 at 11 a.m. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to American Legion Post 202, 200 1st Street, Hackensack, MN 56452. Arrangements by Dennis Funeral Home, Walker, MN.
