Gary Duane Wick

March 27, 1953 ~ December 23, 2018 (age 65)

Gary Duane Wick, 65, of Laporte, MN died Sunday, December 23, 2018 at his home.

Gary was born March 27, 1953 to Harold and Florence (Dilworth) Wick in Grand Forks, ND.  His family made their home in Faribault, MN, where Gary graduated from Faribault Senior High School in 1971.  He was a state wrestling champion and also played football, track and field.  The family spent many summers at their Plantagenet lake home, where Gary learned to fish and hunt.  In 1975, he met Rebecca Lynn Steiner, whom he married in 1977 in Morristown, MN.  Together they raised three children in Faribault, MN.

Gary enjoyed the outdoors.  His love for camping, fishing and hunting had a huge influence on his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  He fished the professional Muskie tournaments throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin for a number of years.  Before moving to northern Minnesota in 2000, he worked for many years at McQuay’s in Faribault, and was a member of the Sheetmetal Workers Union.  His love of fishing and hunting became a love of creativity.  Gary began painting and wood carving.  He loved painting the scenery he saw while fishing and carving the animals he hunted out of cedarwood.  In 2006, Gary and Rebecca divorced.  He continued to make his home in Laporte, and spent his time painting and fishing the lakes he loved with family and friends.  He will be greatly missed!

Gary is survived by sons, Michael (Robin) Wick of Faribault, MN; Samuel (Tina) Wick of Blackduck, MN; and daughter, Cynthia (Kevin) Schmidtke of Walker, MN; 16 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; brothers, Harold, (Claire) Wick, Jr. of Bemidji, MN, Roger (Susan) Wick of Fargo, ND, Stephen Wick of Bemidji, MN, Paul (Connie) Wick of Owatonna, MN; sisters, Peggy (Bill) Berg of Faribault, MN, and Sally (Randy) Schuehle of Eagan, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold (Sonny) and Florence (Flossy) Wick; grandson, Wyatt Schmidtke; nephew, Matthew Schuehle; and sister-in-law, Madalyn Wick.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, January 26, 2019 at Dennis Funeral Home in Walker, MN.   Dennis Funeral Home is handling arrangements (www.dennisfuneralhome.com).
