Roland Philip Liljedahl, 91, of Akeley, MN died Thursday, November 30, 2017 at the VA Extended Care and Rehabilitation in St. Cloud, MN.
Roland was born November 26, 1926 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Philip and Gladys (Kroger) Liljedahl. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on September 12, 1944 and served from October 24, 1944 to July 3, 1946. He reenlisted and served from February 27, 1951 to February 21, 1955. Again, he reenlisted and served from February 19, 1957 to March 17, 1961, when he was honorably discharged. He was awarded a Victory Ribbon, an American Area Ribbon, an Asiatic Pacific Ribbon, a National Defense Service Medal, a United Nations Service Medal, and a Korean Service Medal. In his later years Roland worked for Northern Lights Casino, Walker, MN and loved to collect books and restore vintage radios.
Roland is survived by longtime friends and caregivers, Tom and Karen and Pete; sisters and brothers Diane, Gloria, Jerry, Ronald and William Jr.
He was preceded in death by his lifelong companion, Betty, Mother Gladys Kroeger, Step Father William Kroeger, Father Phillip Liljedahl and brother John Liljedahl.
A funeral service with full military honors will be held Thursday, December 7, 2017 at 6:30 PM with a visitation beginning at 3:00 PM in Dennis Funeral Home. Interment will be in Forrest Lawn Cemetery, St. Paul, MN. Arrangements are being provided by Dennis Funeral Home of Walker, MN (www.dennisfuneralhome.com).
