Leon Emil ArolaDecember 14, 1919 ~ September 4, 2017 (age 97)
Leon Emil Arola, 97, of Walker MN passed away on Monday, Sept 4, 2017 at May Creek Lodge. Leon was born on Dec 14, 1919 to John and Amelia (Czarnetzke) Arola in Frazee MN, the oldest of six children. He grew up in the Walker area and loved spending time on Leech Lake. He spent many hours guiding fishermen on the lake since the age of 12. Leon attended Walker Public School, excelling in football and basketball. He was inducted into the Army Air Corp at Fort Snelling in 1942 and served in WWII stationed in India as Crew Chief Engineer and made 42 trips in military transport aircrafts over the Himalayan Mts into China to resupply the war effort.
In 1945 he was discharged and returned to Walker to marry Rose Marie Parker, whom he met at Ah-gwah-ching prior to the war. They married on July 6, 1946 and had eight children over the next ten years. He loved God's great creation! He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and just being outside! He "lived the seasons" - made his own smoked fish and wine, picked wild mushrooms, harvested wild rice and ate perch "fish eggs". Leon had jobs as a baseball umpire, flagman at Bemidji Speedway and served as Cass County Deputy Sheriff. He was actively involved in the American Legion Post 134 for 72 years. He proudly watched his kids and grandkids participate in various sports and activities. Leon retired from Ah-gwah-ching in 1982 after 41 and 1/2 years as Chief Power Plant Engineer and lived a long, fulfilled retirement of 35 years....and completed "millions" of puzzles!
Survivors include his children: Robert (Jill) Arola, Richard (Michele) Arola, Roger (Mary C.) Arola, Mary Arola, Carol (Greg) Ravenhorst, Susan (Steve) Schuler, and Joanne Arola; Grandchildren: Pam (Andy) Johnson, Andrea (Glenn) Ravenhorst-Ward, Gregory (Katy) Ravenhorst; Nicholas (Jamie) Arola, Molly Arola; Benjamin Schuler and Daniel Schuler; 15 great-grandchildren and brother, Wilfred (Sharleen) Arola and many nieces and nephews.
